Maubanog Festival: Unraveling the Vibrant Culture of Mauban, Quezon

by - July 23, 2023

The Philippines is a country well known for its extensive cultural heritage.  Each of its 82 provinces has a distinctive method of celebrating festivals that honor the history, traditions, and customs. Early this month, I got the chance to experience the Maubanog Festival in Mauban, Quezon. The word "Maubanog" is a combination of the two Filipino words "Mauban" and "maubanog," where "Mauban" alludes to the town's name and "maubanog" means "loud or noisy," which is a fitting description of the festival's boisterous celebration.

The Maubanog Festival is a joyous celebration that honors the town's history and serves as a symbol of its enduring character. It features vibrant music, regular local events, special gatherings, food & agricultural stalls, and cultural performances. Locals and tourists alike are drawn to the week-long festival and eagerly take part in the captivating festivities.

The Consultative Assembly of Tourism Stakeholders with the Philippine Tourism Promotions Board kicked off the event. Stakeholders from hotels, tour companies, and tour transportation companies received recognition for their contributions to the Mauban tourist industry.

We also witness the official opening of the much-awaited Maubanog Festival. Aside from parade and dance presentations, booths are found within the Mauban Municipality where diverse provincial goods are displayed, including native bags, mulberry products, pili nuts, and other regional specialties.

In his first State of the Municipality Address in 2023, Honorable Mayor Ninong Erwin Pastrana shared with his cherished Maubanins the amazing accomplishments he had made in his first 365 days in office.

I also attended the Almusalang Bayan, where over 500 people gathered and enjoyed a variety of morning treats like puto, kutsinta, espasol, and Nutriban.

The Paligsahan ng Sayaw sa Festival is one of the highlights of the Maubanog Festival. Students from different grade levels represented their schools during a cultural dance performance that highlighted the province's distinctive goods, breathtaking tourist attractions, and Maubanin's way of life.  The audience are treated to a kaleidoscope of hues and noises as they take in the rhythmic motions and jubilant ambiance that capture the essence of Filipino fiestas.

Additionally, the Maubanog Festival hosts a number of cultural performances and contests that showcase local talent. The Maubanog Festival offers a stage for the neighborhood to display its artistic talent and sense of historical pride, from traditional music performances to beauty pageants.

The Maubanog Festival is a captivating event that combines fervent festivities, cultural legacy, and religious devotion in honor of Patron San Buenaventura. It demonstrates the people's enduring ties to the past and dedication to maintaining their customs for future generations. The warmth and spirit of the people welcome everyone with open arms to take part in this vivid cultural show. True to its name, the Maubanog Festival honors both life and the ties that bind us all together. I am happy to be part of the Maubanog Festival and amazed by the depth of this community's cultural heritage. Thank you, Mauban, Quezon!
