I've always wanted to travel to Batanes, and last June I finally had the chance to see this stunning region. Batanes is the northernmost and the smallest province in the Philippines in terms of population and land area.

Its capital is Basco which is located on the island of Batan. The island of Batanes is renowned for its scenic surroundings, historical sites, and hospitable locals. In this blog post, I will share with you the places I have visited in Batanes.

Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel, Basco, Batanes
The Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel is a fascinating historical landmark that draws both adventurers and history buffs to the picturesque village of Basco, Batanes. This enigmatic tunnel was built during World War II and holds stories of bravery, survival, and tenacity.

When Japanese troops landed in Batanes in 1941, the 250-meter-long Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel was made up of volcanic rocks and cement and served as their shelter.

The Ivatans were instructed by the military to dig the tunnel between 1941 and 1945, resulting in the construction of five exits, chambers, bunkers, and a water reservoir. They used the bunker as a lookout point while engaged in combat with the Americans.

Valugan Boulder Beach, Basco, Batanes
The three-kilometer beach is located along the coast of Batan Island where thousands of different size boulders can be seen. These boulders are said to be expelled from Mt. Iraya, an active nearby volcano.

The Pacific Ocean is directly in front of Valugan Boulder Beach, rendering it susceptible to storms and the constant hammering of waves. The symphony of noises produced by the waves crashing on the boulders heightens the drama of the already dramatic surroundings.
